👮 Cyprus Psychologists Call for Continuous Psychological Assessment of Police Firearm Permit Holders

The vice-president of the Cyprus Psychologists’ Association, Stella Katsari, has urged the establishment of a formal framework for the continuous psychological assessment of police officers, particularly concerning the possession and renewal of firearm permits. Her calls come following a tragic incident in Limassol where a police officer critically wounded his wife with his service weapon before committing suicide.

Currently, psychometric testing within the Cyprus police force occurs only during recruitment. Katsari emphasized that ongoing assessment and psychological support are essential for preventing incidents, enhancing professional competence, and ensuring accountability within the force.

She highlighted the importance of systematic psychological support for police departments frequently exposed to traumatic events, noting that such services should be provided by licensed professionals to maintain ethical standards and institutional responsibility.
