💊 Cyprus Health Insurance Organisation fines three doctors €11,500 for GHS violations

Cyprus’s Health Insurance Organisation (HIO) fined three doctors a total of €11,500 last month for violating General Health System (GHS) regulations. Inspections revealed that an endocrinologist and a nephrologist over-prescribed hormone replacement drugs, while an orthopaedic surgeon sought reimbursement for unperformed procedures.

The endocrinologist was fined €5,000 for issuing prescriptions in unjustified quantities and combinations, reportedly including testosterone. The nephrologist received a €1,500 fine for prescribing medications outside approved indications. Meanwhile, the orthopaedic surgeon was fined €5,000 after patients complained about claims for procedures and examinations not documented or performed.

These cases are part of broader enforcement efforts by the HIO, which imposed €92,000 in fines on nine doctors and one hospital during the first half of 2026. The organisation continues monitoring healthcare providers to ensure compliance with GHS guidelines and protect patients from improper billing and treatments.
