🏗️ Interior Minister urges immediate discussion on priority bills addressing dangerous buildings, jointly owned properties, and civil protection reforms
Interior Minister Constantinos Ioannou has called on MPs to begin immediate discussions on three key bills targeting dangerous buildings, jointly owned buildings, and the restructuring of civil protection services. Speaking at a House interior committee meeting, Ioannou emphasized the need to improve the legal framework for identifying and managing dangerous constructions, noting that not all condemned buildings require demolition as many can be repaired.
He highlighted the importance of mapping dangerous buildings in collaboration with local district organisations and technical experts to develop a hazard scale. The minister also addressed the jointly owned buildings bill, which aims to resolve ownership disputes, regulate maintenance costs, and introduce mandatory insurance provisions. Despite objections from local organisations over the projected €1.5 million implementation cost and creation of 30 jobs, Ioannou stressed the bill's benefits for property management.
On civil protection, the minister detailed plans to create a general directorate within the Interior Ministry to enhance coordination among firefighting services. Ioannou also confirmed that compensation for property losses from the 2025 Limassol wildfires has mostly been paid, with outstanding claims expected to be settled shortly.
