📰 Cyprus Presidency advances EU digital and AI agenda with focus on innovation and autonomy

During its six-month term as President of the Council of the EU, Cyprus played a pivotal role in pushing forward critical European initiatives on digital policy, artificial intelligence, research, and innovation. Deputy Minister Nicodemos Damianou highlighted that Cyprus helped craft a more ambitious agenda aimed at strengthening Europe’s technological competitiveness and autonomy.

The Cyprus Presidency received broad recognition from European partners, reflecting effective preparation and management throughout its tenure. Key achievements included advancing legislation on cybersecurity, digital infrastructure, and space technologies, as well as reaching consensus on the next European research and innovation framework programme for 2028-2034, expected to double the current €95 billion Horizon Europe budget.

Cyprus also focused on digital transition challenges like protecting minors online amid complex AI-driven environments. Domestically, the country showcased its growing innovation ecosystem, advancing digital services such as online police facilities and the pilot digital justice system. Going forward, efforts will continue to promote digitalisation while encouraging greater public uptake of e-services, contributing to a Europe that balances technological independence with global cooperation.
