🏠 MPs urge improvements to Ktizo housing scheme and Turkish Cypriot property legislation
Members of Parliament serving on the House refugees committee have called for urgent improvements to the government’s Ktizo housing scheme for refugees and the implementation of laws managing Turkish Cypriot properties. Committee chairman Nikos Kettiros highlighted ongoing delays in funding and grants for apartment buildings in refugee settlements, with funding expected to be reviewed by the agency board on July 9 and then forwarded to the finance ministry. Concerns were also raised about public safety issues regarding undemolished and unsecured apartment blocks frequently broken into by squatters.
The committee reviewed the legislative framework introduced in July 2025 for managing Turkish Cypriot properties, noting some weaknesses despite its objective, points-based allocation system. Since implementation, 37 residences, 71 commercial premises, and 177 agricultural plots have been allocated, while inspections reclaimed 79 properties with further legal cases pending. Political representatives from various parties emphasized the need to accelerate procedures, citing slow progress and urging reassessment of the scheme and proposed amendments for greater transparency and efficiency.
