⚔️ Cyprus House President Calls for Enhanced Greece-Cyprus Defence and Regional Security Cooperation
House President Annita Demetriou urged the Hellenic Parliament to deepen cooperation between Greece and Cyprus in defence and regional security. She emphasized the strategic importance of both countries as European democracies facing common challenges such as wars, migration, energy disruptions, and hybrid threats. Demetriou highlighted the need for stronger deterrence, peace through extroversion, and stability to foster development.
Demetriou also called for reforms within the EU to improve decision-making, foreign policy coordination, and defence capabilities, underscoring the importance of projects like the SAFE programme and energy initiatives including the Great Sea Interconnector to integrate Cyprus more closely with European markets. She stressed the significance of turning the Eastern Mediterranean into a zone of cooperation, particularly advocating for Turkey to pursue collaboration over confrontation.
Concluding her address, Demetriou reaffirmed Cyprus' position on the Cyprus issue, demanding the withdrawal of occupying troops and the restoration of sovereignty while appreciating Greece's recent security support during a threat to Cyprus. She called for continued partnerships with France, the United States, Israel, Egypt, India, and Gulf states to bolster regional security and safeguard Hellenism on the island.
