🌊 BirdLife Cyprus and Terra Cypria urge enforcement of environmental laws at Lady’s Mile beach

BirdLife Cyprus and Terra Cypria have called on the British Sovereign Base Areas Administration (SBA) to enforce legislation and carry out checks on businesses operating at Lady’s Mile beach, a protected area within the Akrotiri wetland complex. The organisations highlighted concerns about activities such as night events, intense lighting, noise, and unauthorized use of beach infrastructure during the critical breeding season for sea turtles and birds.

The groups noted that violations have increased over the past five years, despite existing regulations requiring the removal of heavy beach equipment every evening and the need for environmental licenses for events. Despite repeated written requests, the SBA Administration has yet to provide detailed information on monitoring practices or enforcement actions taken.

BirdLife Cyprus and Terra Cypria demand transparency on compliance monitoring, licensing procedures for events, and immediate enforcement to reduce disturbances. They stress the need for a zero-tolerance policy on violations to preserve the area's ecological integrity and call on local municipalities to clarify the implementation of approved beach plans.
