📰 Diko Leader Papadopoulos Requests Meeting with President Christodoulides Ahead of Cabinet Reshuffle
A letter from Diko leader Nicholas Papadopoulos to President Nikos Christodoulides has prompted the government to postpone this week's cabinet meeting by a day, shifting it from Wednesday to Thursday. Papadopoulos urged a meeting to discuss a potential cabinet reshuffle, upcoming appointments to semi-state boards, and the current governance agreement between their parties.
Following May's parliamentary elections, rumours of a reshuffle have intensified as two key government-supporting parties, Dipa and Edek, lost all parliamentary seats. Diko, holding eight seats, remains the sole legislative supporter of Christodoulides and may seek to increase its influence within the government. Currently, Diko controls three ministries, while Dipa and Edek control three others.
President Christodoulides has so far refrained from commenting publicly on the cabinet changes. Papadopoulos' reference to cooperation hints at potential tension, as Diko has historically withdrawn support from governments midway through their terms. Nonetheless, relations have remained relatively stable following a recent dispute related to comments made after the president’s chief of staff resigned amid a campaign finance controversy.
