👮 Protest planned in Strovolos ahead of Dimitris Christofias Avenue renaming ceremony with police preparing security measures

A protest is scheduled in Strovolos on Monday evening at 6:45 pm ahead of the official ceremony renaming Argyroupoleos Avenue as Dimitris Christofias Avenue. The event, attended by President Nikos Christodoulides and other officials, has drawn opposition from the far-right student group Efen, who announced the demonstration and criticized the renaming as an attempt to "erase history." They referenced the 2011 Mari explosion and economic crisis during Christofias’ presidency.

Police have announced security measures including deployment of officers to maintain public order and manage traffic. Temporary traffic restrictions may be introduced around the ceremony site to ensure public safety, with motorists advised to use alternative routes where possible. The renaming follows a decision by the Strovolos municipal council, which holds sole authority over such naming decisions, confirmed by the EOA head Antonis Economides.

The newly renamed avenue, which opened to traffic earlier this month, connects the GSP area to Tseriou Avenue. The controversy surrounding the decision has sparked wider discussion on the process of naming or renaming streets in Cyprus and the importance of balancing respect for historical events with honoring former officials.
