🍽️ EU mandates Cyprus takeaway outlets to accept reusable cups from February 2025

Starting February 2025, takeaway coffee shops and food outlets in Cyprus will be required to accept customers’ reusable cups under new European Union packaging waste rules. The regulation aims to reduce packaging waste and is directly applicable across all EU member states, although Cyprus must establish enforcement mechanisms such as inspections and penalties. Businesses must serve beverages in customers' reusable containers when hygiene standards are met.

The new rules involve significant operational changes, requiring businesses to develop clear procedures for handling reusable containers, train staff, and inform customers about accepted container types. The regulation also impacts takeaway food outlets, which must accommodate customer-supplied containers without compromising food safety.

Looking ahead, from February 2028, most food service businesses will need to offer reusable packaging via return or deposit schemes. Additionally, single-use packaging for food and beverages consumed onsite will be largely banned from January 2030, with exemptions for small businesses. Authorities emphasize the need for extensive preparation and government guidance to ensure smooth implementation of these measures.
