👮 Cyprus to install AI traffic cameras to detect mobile phone use while driving
Cyprus is set to introduce artificial-intelligence traffic cameras that can detect drivers using mobile phones, according to Public Works and Transport Minister Alexis Vafeadis. The new technology aims to reduce traffic accidents and violations by identifying drivers who hold or use phones while driving.
Speaking at the House Transport Committee, Vafeadis emphasized that the AI cameras are designed to improve road safety rather than to trap motorists. He highlighted that this is the most effective way to deter the dangerous behavior of using mobile phones behind the wheel.
Additionally, fixed speed cameras will be installed at the beginning and end of certain road sections to calculate average speeds, enabling authorities to issue penalties for speeding violations. These measures reflect Cyprus's commitment to enhancing traffic safety through innovative technology.
