🛩️ Cyprus Government Prioritizes Strengthening Maritime Competitiveness Amid Global Challenges

Cyprus is focused on enhancing the competitiveness of its flag and maritime sector amid geopolitical uncertainty and the push for decarbonisation, Deputy Shipping Minister Marina Hadjimanolis said at a symposium in Limassol. Speaking on behalf of President Nikos Christodoulides, Hadjimanolis described shipping as a key driver of economic growth and global connectivity for Cyprus.

The ministry aims to support the sector through digital transformation, innovation, and sustainable practices, while also amplifying Cyprus’s influence in international maritime forums. The government views clean, safe, and sustainable seas as a strategic priority, emphasizing cooperation to transition towards greener fleets and modern infrastructure.

International Chamber of Shipping Secretary General Thomas Kazakos highlighted risks from geopolitical tensions affecting seafarers, calling for realistic approaches to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. He warned against fragmentation in global trade regulations, which could increase costs and reduce shipping efficiency, stressing that shipping remains essential by carrying around 90% of global goods despite rising trade barriers.
