🎉 New NiMAC Exhibition Sparks Controversy Over Turkish Cypriot Artist's Inclusion
The opening of the new exhibition 'A Slight Indisposition' at Nicosia Municipal Arts Centre (NiMAC) has faced political backlash due to the participation of Turkish Cypriot artist Emin Cizenel. The Ecologists party criticized his inclusion, highlighting his role as the designer of the flag used by the Turkish-occupied north of Cyprus. The party described the flag as a symbol of occupation and the island's partition, urging organisers to consider the political implications of including such figures in cultural events.
The exhibition features 16 contemporary artists from Cyprus and abroad and is intended as a platform for artistic expression. Despite acknowledging the importance of freedom in art, the Ecologists emphasized the need to respect historical memory and sensitivities related to the ongoing conflict in Cyprus. Emin Cizenel, originally from Malia in Limassol, studied in Istanbul and Vienna and is known beyond his artistic career for creating the controversial symbol displayed in the occupied north since the 1980s.
