🧒 Cyprus launches easy-to-read national disability action plan to enhance accessibility
Cyprus unveiled an easy-to-read version of its national disability action plan in Nicosia, aimed at making the policy more accessible to people with intellectual disabilities and those facing linguistic or cognitive barriers. The plan, which addresses education, employment, accessibility, and healthcare, is designed to broaden access to public information and promote the rights of people with disabilities.
Social Welfare Deputy Minister Clea Hadjistefanou-Papaellina emphasized that the initiative is the beginning of integrating this accessible format, known as 'text for all', across public sector documents and services. The process involved 54 individuals with intellectual disabilities and autism spectrum disorder to ensure meaningful participation.
The publication includes 95 original illustrations and alternative text for screen reading software to aid people with visual impairments. Disability advocates highlighted the importance of developing local expertise in accessible publications and including those with severe communication difficulties. Cooperation with local universities has already begun to expand knowledge in this field.
