👮 Over 100 convicted sex offenders against minors under supervision in Cyprus amid monitoring gaps
More than 100 individuals convicted of sexual offences against minors are currently under supervision in Cyprus, highlighting concerns about gaps in the monitoring system due to the lack of dedicated inspectors. The number of supervised offenders has risen from around 70 a year ago to approximately 100 today. Meanwhile, 100 people are serving prison sentences for sexual offences against minors, with additional inmates held on remand for related crimes.
The supervision authority, established in 2014, monitors released offenders through restrictions such as employment and residence limits, psychological support, and risk assessment. However, a draft bill designed to strengthen the authority's powers and introduce tougher monitoring measures—including bans near schools, internet restrictions, curfews, and mandatory reporting—is still pending submission to parliament after being reviewed by the Legal Service and Social Welfare Services since early 2024.
In a recent related case, a psychologist and a sports coach were sentenced by the Limassol Criminal Court for sexual offences against minors. They received prison terms and post-release restrictions, including bans on working with or being near children for three years after their release.
