🌊 Investigation into Oroklini deaths highlights lifeguard coverage and dangerous sea currents
The tragic deaths of two 20-year-old Somali women on June 18 in Oroklini have sparked concerns over lifeguard availability and hazardous coastal conditions. Despite the sea appearing calm, experts warn that strong currents and sudden seabed drops created a deadly situation in the area.
Coastal engineer Xenia Loizidou explained that wave interactions between breakwaters generate secondary waves and reverse seabed currents, creating a dangerous underwater environment. These currents can pull swimmers into deep water steps, approximately three meters deep, causing panic and increasing the risk of drowning.
In addition to these natural risks, issues with lifeguard staffing and limited operating hours of lifeguard towers have been raised. Experts also noted that coastal erosion linked to breakwaters has damaged the promenade and nearby infrastructure, potentially exacerbating the hazard for beachgoers in the area.
