📰 Trilingual commemorative album celebrates Melkonian Educational Institute's legacy in Cyprus
A trilingual commemorative album documenting the 79-year history and legacy of the Melkonian Educational Institute was officially presented at the Presidential Palace last week. Published in Greek, Armenian, and English by the Press and Information Office, the nearly 400-page volume traces the institute’s founding in 1926 as a refuge for Armenian genocide orphans, its development into a leading educational centre for the Armenian diaspora, and its closure in 2004.
Education Minister Athena Michaelidou described the publication as "an act of historical and moral duty," highlighting the institute’s significance in preserving Armenian identity, language, and culture, as well as its deep ties with Cyprus. Armenian representative Vartkes Mahdessian emphasized the collective effort behind the project and expressed hope that the Melkonian Institute might one day reopen.
The event featured presentations by the editorial team and cultural performances, underscoring the institute’s lasting impact as both an educational institution and a symbol of resilience for the Armenian community in Cyprus.
