🧒 Cyprus Government Takes Stand Against Powerful Unions on Education, Health, and Pension Reforms

The Cyprus government has recently shown firm resistance to powerful unions that have long influenced national policies, particularly in education, health, and labor sectors. Education Minister Athena Michaelidou defied teaching unions by advancing teacher evaluations, refusing to concede to union demands for control over evaluation criteria and personnel. Similarly, Health Minister Neophytos Charalambides pushed for addressing the nursing shortage in private hospitals by proposing to hire third-country nurses, despite strong opposition from nursing unions.

Labor Minister Marinos Mousiouttas also resisted pressure from major union federations regarding pension reforms, rejecting demands to equate the minimum pension with the minimum wage and other key union proposals. These moves mark a shift in governmental policy, prioritizing societal interests over union demands that previously held significant sway.

Despite political parties hesitating to support some reforms, the current administration, backed by President Nikos Christodoulides, continues to confront union dominance, signaling a potential new era where national policies are shaped beyond union dictates.
