🧒 Cyprus launches new special education unit to improve services for children with disabilities

President Nikos Christodoulides announced the establishment of a special education and inclusion unit within the Ministry of Education to unify all existing special education services into one coordinated structure. The move aims to create a single point of reference for parents and enhance support for children with disabilities. This initiative is part of a broader effort to modernize Cyprus' education system and reform the 27-year-old special education legislation.

At an event held at the presidential palace, children with disabilities were invited to share their experiences with government officials. The president emphasized the importance of listening directly to these children to understand their needs better. Proposed legislative changes will introduce personalized assessments for each child and aim to ensure that all students graduate with a common school attendance certificate.

The government has already implemented several improvements, including hiring more support escorts, expanding training programs for education staff, and opening new special school facilities. Additional measures extend school attendance until age 22 and enhance parental leave for parents of children with disabilities. Plans are underway for a comprehensive proposal addressing post-school support, scheduled for presentation in mid-July.
