👮 Direct Democracy demands resignation of Attorney-General and deputy amid Mafia State affair controversy

Direct Democracy has tabled a parliamentary resolution calling for the resignation of Attorney-General George Savvides and his deputy Savvas Angelides. The move, announced by MP Diana Constantinides, aims to restore public trust following criticisms over the handling of the Mafia State affair and the anti-corruption authority's investigation into allegations originally made by journalist Makarios Drousiotis.

The investigation concluded that former president Nicos Anastasiades may face criminal liability for abuse of power, prompting the government to plan the appointment of an independent team of criminal investigators to determine whether to pursue charges. Government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis emphasized that multiple investigators would be chosen based on qualifications and absence of conflicts of interest.

However, opposition parties Akel and Alma have criticized the government’s approach, arguing that the appointment should be made by the anti-corruption authority rather than the cabinet. Both Savvides and Angelides have recused themselves from the case. The issue is set for further discussion by the legal affairs committee before returning to parliamentary plenary.
