👮 Police warn public about tax refund phishing scam targeting personal information
Police have issued a warning following a reported phishing attempt involving emails impersonating the tax department. The scam email falsely claimed the recipient was approved for a tax refund and directed them to a fake website designed to steal personal data.
The victim recognized the scam and reported it to authorities. The Nicosia Criminal Investigation Department is currently investigating the incident. Police emphasized that no official tax or government agency will request passwords or banking details via email.
Citizens are urged to delete suspicious messages immediately, avoid entering personal information on unofficial sites, and verify emails by contacting the relevant department directly. Utilizing two-step verification for online accounts is also strongly recommended to enhance security.
