🌦️ Climate extremes threaten EU economic growth with agriculture in Cyprus most at risk

A recent European Central Bank study has revealed that extreme heat waves and droughts are increasingly hindering economic growth across the European Union, with Cyprus’s agricultural sector among the hardest hit. Analyzing 1,117 regions from 2002 to 2022, researchers developed climate-augmented models that show these climate shocks can reduce annual agricultural growth by up to 7.6 percentage points in affected areas.

The Mediterranean, including Cyprus, Italy, Spain, and Malta, faces the highest frequency of coinciding heat and drought events, which have intensified in recent years. While agriculture suffers the most significant impacts, industries like manufacturing show resilience, attributed to indoor production shielding against climate extremes.

The study highlights that these climate events not only disrupt agriculture but also impact transport, electricity, and tourism sectors, with over 40% of bank lending in the eurozone linked to firms vulnerable to drought. The authors emphasize the need for integrating climate data into economic forecasting and targeted adaptation policies to mitigate cascading risks across economies and financial sectors.
