🌍 President Christodoulides Urged to Reject UN Envoy's Loose Federation Proposal for Cyprus

President Nicos Christodoulides has been urged to oppose the UN Secretary-General’s envoy María Angela Holguín's reportedly promoted idea of a loose federation for Cyprus, which critics claim could lead to permanent division and conflict. Political scientist Kyriacos Jacovides warns that the ambiguous nature of Holguín’s proposal—interpreted differently by Greek and Turkish Cypriots—risks replicating the tragic outcomes experienced by Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, the Soviet Union, and Lebanon.

Jacovides criticizes the suggested two-constituent-state arrangement, which includes separate legislatures without an elected federal parliament, arguing this effectively represents a two-state solution under the guise of unity. He emphasizes that allocating political authority based on ethnic or religious lines constitutes racism and cautions that such a structure is a “multi-megaton time bomb” threatening the foundations of the Cypriot state.

He calls on the Cypriot leadership to learn from history and reject proposals prone to conflicting interpretations that could lead to dissolution. Jacovides stresses that the country’s political future should avoid the mistakes of other divided states and opposes ambiguous plans that may worsen the Cyprus problem.
