Cyprus MPs clashed during the House institutions committee over a bill proposing to exempt the president and members of the advisory council from submitting asset declarations, known locally as ‘pothen esches’. Proponents argue the council’s consultative role lacks executive authority, and thus its members should not be subject to asset disclosure rules designed for public officials with decision-making powers.
Support for the proposal came mainly from Diko and Elam parties, while Akel opposed it, emphasizing the council’s influence in appointing heads of semi-governmental organisations. Other parties like Alma and Direct Democracy expressed reservations, requesting further clarifications. The Justice Ministry and other government bodies backed the amendment, citing the principle of proportionality and maintaining that accountability mechanisms remain intact.
The committee chairman noted the issue’s history, recalling a similar bill’s rejection in 2025. Debate is ongoing, with critics warning the exemption could undermine transparency. The committee will continue reviewing the bill before deciding on its advancement to the House plenary for voting.
