🌦️ Western Europe experiences deadly heatwave with record temperatures and widespread disruptions

Western Europe is grappling with a severe heatwave that has broken temperature records, caused dozens of fatalities, and led to significant infrastructure and agricultural damage. France recorded its hottest day in nearly 80 years, with temperatures peaking at 44.3°C in Pissos. The heat has sparked power outages in Brittany and killed hundreds of thousands of birds at poultry farms. At least 48 people have drowned in France trying to escape the heat, while two children died from heat exposure in a car. Spain and Italy are also facing extreme temperatures, prompting health alerts and early school closures.

The heatwave, driven by a rare weather pattern known as an Omega block, is trapping intense heat across the region, with temperatures soaring up to 18°C above normal. Meteo-France compares the current conditions to the devastating 2003 heatwave. Measures including altered work hours, scaled-back public transport, and cancellation of outdoor sports have been implemented across affected countries. The extreme heat has also impacted cultural events and tourism, with alterations at major landmarks and fashion shows to mitigate risks.

Authorities in affected areas are taking precautions to protect vulnerable populations and prevent further casualties. Despite the heat, tourists continue to visit iconic sites like the Vatican, adapting to the conditions with umbrellas and frequent hydration. The World Meteorological Organization warns that Europe’s warming climate makes such prolonged heat episodes increasingly frequent.
