🏗️ Larnaca secures €1.2M to replace and repair manholes to reduce groundwater inflow
The Larnaca district government has announced a €1.2 million project to replace and repair a total of 73 manholes in the city over the next 36 months. Eighteen manholes will be fully replaced, while 55 will undergo preventative repairs as part of the initiative, which targets the Phase A sewer system established in the 1990s.
The primary goal of this project is to limit the inflow of brackish groundwater into the sewer network. Brackish water, found in coastal areas like Larnaca, has a salinity level between freshwater and seawater. This inflow places additional strain on the sewer network, wastewater treatment facilities, and the management of reclaimed water.
Funded by the Water Development Department, the project is structured with the first 14 months dedicated to replacing the manholes, followed by repair and maintenance work to ensure the long-term efficiency of the sewer infrastructure.
