👮 Justice Minister Fytriris presents legislative plan focusing on combating organized crime
The Minister of Justice and Public Order, Kostas Fytriris, presented the legislative priorities of his ministry before the Parliamentary Committee on Legal Affairs. Emphasizing the fight against organized crime, Fytriris highlighted the need to advance the stalled bill on surveillance measures from the previous parliamentary term. Key initiatives include revising the Constitution, amending Article 17, and passing legislation to allow asset confiscation when property can't be justified, a bill already approved by the Cabinet and pending submission to Parliament.
Fytriris also addressed ongoing legislative workload, with 38 bills pending in batches and 10 new ones to be introduced by his ministry. Discussing law enforcement matters, he noted a study for police reorganization is underway to modernize operations, equipment, and training. Fytriris confirmed plans to equip officers with body cameras and noted the readiness of the special police unit against organized crime, which awaits only facility completion.
Concerns were raised about delays in constructing juvenile detention facilities and issues with traffic fine notifications, estimated at 360,000 unpaid penalties. Fytriris stressed all police actions must comply with the law and promised legislative amendments if needed to ensure legal enforcement of fines. Parliamentary members from various parties underscored the importance of these priorities, calling for comprehensive reforms in family law, prison system, and anti-corruption measures.
