🌍 Cyprus to launch new body to promote universities internationally and attract quality students
Cyprus is set to create a new organisation modelled on the British Council aimed at promoting its universities abroad and attracting more international students. President Nikos Christodoulides announced the initiative at Frederick University in Nicosia, noting that preparatory work is underway for a coordinated national effort involving both public and private institutions.
The new body will serve to enhance overseas promotion and foster cooperation among Cypriot higher education institutions. Higher education currently contributes 7 to 8 percent of Cyprus’s GDP, highlighting its importance as an economic sector. Christodoulides emphasized the need to balance recruitment with maintaining high academic standards and course quality.
The government’s strategy focuses on improving opportunities for young people and expanding research capacity. The president also highlighted the recent partnership between Frederick University and the University of Manchester to establish a new medical school, exemplifying ongoing development within the sector.
