⚔️ Cyprus officially reports Turkish airspace and maritime violations to the United Nations
Cyprus has formally notified the United Nations of numerous violations by Turkey in its national airspace, territorial waters, and international air traffic regulations between March and May 2026. In a letter dated June 22, 2026, addressed to UN Secretary-General António Guterres, Cyprus's Permanent Representative, Ambassador Maria Michail, detailed 520 aerial and 23 maritime violations by Turkish military forces during this period.
The violations included incursions by Turkish military UAVs, helicopters, and fighter jets into the Nicosia Flight Information Region and Cyprus's national airspace without diplomatic clearance. Additionally, Turkish naval vessels were reported to have illegally entered Cyprus’s territorial waters and used closed ports, including Famagusta and Kyrenia, as part of military operations.
Ambassador Michail emphasized that these actions violate Cyprus's sovereignty and territorial integrity, contravening international law and the UN Charter. Despite these challenges, Cyprus remains committed to supporting efforts aimed at resuming negotiations for a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem based on a bizonal, bicommunal federation with political equality as outlined by relevant Security Council resolutions.
