🌍 UN Security Council to Review New Reports on Cyprus Peacekeeping and Negotiations on July 16

The United Nations Security Council is scheduled to deliberate the upcoming reports on the UN peacekeeping force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) and the organization's good offices on the island on July 16. These reports, submitted by Secretary-General Antonio Guterres by mid-July, will focus on progress towards meaningful negotiations to resolve the Cyprus dispute.

UNFICYP Chief Khassim Diagne is expected to brief the council on the latest developments ahead of the session. The reports come amid renewed diplomatic efforts, including recent visits by UN envoy Maria Angela Holguin to Cyprus, Ankara, Athens, and Brussels, aimed at jumpstarting formal negotiations.

Both Cypriot leaders, President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman, have prepared for an enlarged meeting involving the island's two communities, guarantor powers, and the UN. This meeting is anticipated to take place later in July or early August, with all parties emphasizing the commitment to productive, results-oriented negotiations rather than talks held for their own sake.
