🌦️ Three Nicosia Municipalities to Launch Real-Time Flood Warning System for Pedieos River
Three Nicosia municipalities—Nicosia, Strovolos, and Lakatamia—are implementing a real-time flood warning system along the Pedieos River to prevent loss of life and property damage during heavy rains. The system will send automatic SMS and email alerts to park users and authorities when water levels exceed critical thresholds.
The warning system, part of the Pedieos urban linear park regeneration project, uses sensors to monitor water levels, flow rates, and rainfall at multiple points along the river. Data is processed through algorithms that predict flood risk up to 24 hours in advance, based on historical trends and meteorological forecasts.
A colour-coded risk map will be made publicly accessible, and alerts will be integrated with interactive park information points and other smart city platforms. Municipal control centers will use the data for real-time monitoring, enhancing flood preparedness and public safety in known flood-prone areas such as the Alexandroupoleos Street bridge in Strovolos and several points in Lakatamia.
