💊 Mental Health Services in Cyprus face overcrowding and stigma, says senior nursing officer
A senior nursing officer from Cyprus's Mental Health Services, Anthos Giannapis, addressed Parliament’s Health Committee highlighting critical issues such as societal stigma and facility overcrowding. Giannapis explained that many individuals suffering from psychiatric conditions only seek help at a crisis point due to persistent stigma in Cypriot society.
He also revealed ongoing challenges in finding suitable locations for mental health facilities, as local communities often resist, fearing the arrival of so-called "crazies." Currently, Athalassa Psychiatric Hospital is overcrowded, housing 121 compulsory patients, including individuals with autism for whom no alternative care options exist. Giannapis stressed that the State Health Services Organisation alone should not bear the full responsibility for these issues.
The high number of hospital readmissions further illustrates systemic problems, with approximately 550 out of 1,022 admissions last year being readmissions. The Parliament’s Health Committee continues to examine the widespread difficulties faced by mental health services across Cyprus, including concerns about the structural safety of Athalassa Hospital buildings.
