🌍 Former Cyprus parliament parties briefed by President on Cyprus problem developments

The leaders of Dipa, the Ecologists’ Movement, and Edek — political parties that lost all parliamentary seats in May’s election — were invited to the presidential palace for an update from President Nikos Christodoulides on the Cyprus problem. The discussion highlighted concerns about Turkey’s role and the need for tangible actions to advance progress.

Edek leader Nikos Anastasiou emphasized that Turkey must demonstrate commitment before any improvements in its relations with the European Union can be considered. Ecologists’ Movement leader Stavros Papadouris called for substantive progress beyond previous confidence-building measures. Dipa leader Marios Garoyian noted increased activity at both the UN and EU levels and stressed that resolution depends largely on Turkey’s intentions.

Garoyian also mentioned the active role of UN envoy Maria Angela Holguin and anticipated upcoming discussions in Brussels aimed at moving towards an enlarged meeting convened by the UN Secretary-General. The leaders expressed cautious optimism for the resumption of substantive negotiations to resolve the longstanding Cyprus issue.
