🛩️ Cyprus airports unaffected by EU’s Entry/Exit System causing chaos elsewhere
Cyprus’s airports are currently operating smoothly without issues from the EU’s new Entry/Exit System (EES), which records biometric data of non-EU nationals at Schengen borders. Unlike most European free-movement countries, Cyprus has not yet implemented the system as it remains outside the Schengen Area and continues using traditional passport checks.
The automated EES is now active at external borders of 29 Schengen countries but is not in use in Cyprus, Ireland, and some non-EU Schengen-associated states. The system has caused significant delays and disruptions in other European airports, with waiting times stretching up to five hours during peak travel periods. Airlines and airport authorities have urged the European Commission to suspend EES during the busy summer months, but the request was declined.
Cyprus is monitoring the situation closely as it progresses toward joining Schengen. Once EES is implemented, a sharp increase in border check times may affect the island’s airports, especially since UK nationals—Cyprus’s largest tourist group—will be subject to the new biometric checks.
