🎉 Rare Traditional Cypriot Zurna and Davul Performance at University of Cyprus Festival
The 29th Cultural Festival of the University of Cyprus concludes its first part on July 14 with a unique musical event featuring two of the last living musicians who perform the traditional Cypriot repertoire for zurna and davul. Kemal Deveci and Aziz Kahraman will present an authentic performance of the Cypriot wedding musical ritual at Axiothea Mansion in Nicosia, reviving sounds unchanged by post-1974 Turkish influences.
This event, organized by the Cyprus Music Archive and ethnomusicologist Dr. Nicoletta Demetriou, includes detailed commentary to explain the historical and social significance of the pieces performed. The performance aims to reconnect audiences with the cultural heritage of Cyprus through rare, ritualistic music.
In addition, the Cyprus Music Archive recently completed field recordings of this repertoire, with a record and publication expected soon, further preserving this important part of Cypriot musical tradition.
