🧒 Trial continues in Nicosia over 2019 teen suicide linked to alleged family neglect and social welfare failings

The trial of 11 defendants, including the parents of Stylianos Constantinou and nine social workers, resumed in Nicosia criminal court as defense attorneys challenged the testimony of a family liaison officer. The officer, a prosecution witness, maintained that the teenager who took his own life in 2019 suffered severe neglect at home and social welfare services failed to intervene effectively.

During cross-examination, the liaison officer dismissed claims that Stylianos’ uncleanliness was due to playing in the school sandbox, insisting the larger issue was systemic neglect. She cited a 2011 report that detailed hygiene problems at the family home, incidents of animal abuse, and evidence of abusive behavior by the father. The boy reportedly exhibited withdrawn behavior and expressed neglect to teachers before his death.

The defense argued some testimony was based on subjective opinion and interpretation of abuse manuals, while witnesses have noted warning signs prior to Stylianos's suicide. The sensitive case continues on Friday, with identities withheld due to privacy concerns.
