🪦 Exhumations begin in Limassol to locate remains of Cyprus’ national poet Vasilis Michaelides

Exhumations have commenced at Ayios Nikolaos cemetery in Limassol in a renewed attempt to locate the remains of Vasilis Michaelides, Cyprus’ national poet who died in 1917. The excavation is taking place at the same site examined two years ago but under a new court order allowing experts to collect samples from the entire burial site, known as the “grave of the unknown.”

Previous efforts in 2024 were halted because the court order at that time required stopping once additional human remains were found. This time, bone samples from the entire tomb will be taken for genetic testing, with results expected from the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics.

The initiative was driven by the Limassol Writers’ Society, based on historical testimony and local knowledge supplied by historian Aristides Koudounaris and civil engineer Christos Rotsidis. Despite being buried with honours by Limassol municipality, Michaelides’ grave has never borne a plaque with his name.
