📰 British Cypriot MPs support Andy Burnham to become UK Prime Minister

Both British Cypriot members of the UK House of Commons have thrown their support behind former Manchester mayor Andy Burnham to become the next Prime Minister. Nesil Caliskan, parliamentary undersecretary for devolution, and Bambos Charalambous, representing London constituencies, have nominated Burnham to lead the Labour Party.

Burnham has secured 322 out of 403 Labour MP nominations, surpassing the minimum threshold of 81 to appear on the leadership ballot. If he gains one more nomination before July 16, he will automatically become party leader and Prime Minister on July 20. Burnham expressed gratitude to his supporters and outlined his vision for a new political approach focused on decentralised power and inclusive economic growth.

Both Cypriot MPs initially resisted calls for Starmer's resignation following poor Labour local election results in May, but they now back Burnham after he won a by-election decisively last month. Starmer’s announcement to step down has cleared the path for Burnham’s leadership and premiership.
