👮 Cyprus Cabinet to discuss changes in police protection for high-ranking politicians following parliamentary election
The Cyprus Cabinet is expected to discuss next week proposed changes to the police protection assigned to high-ranking politicians, reflecting shifts in the parliament's composition after May's election. Justice Minister Costas Fitiris is reportedly considering modernizing the protection service, with some officials potentially seeing reductions in their police detail.
Currently, House president Annita Demetriou is protected by ten officers following security concerns, while other political leaders and former presidents have varying degrees of police protection, ranging from one to twelve officers. Notably, the far-right Elam party, which doubled its parliamentary seats, is expected to see its leader Christos Christou's protection detail increase accordingly, while leaders of parties that lost parliamentary representation may lose their police escorts.
Additionally, Fitiris has proposed replacing the 24-hour police protection at his official residence with smart CCTV cameras, signaling a possible move towards modernizing and potentially reducing physical police protection for current and former state officials in the future.
