🌍 Cyprus Successfully Concludes Six-Month EU Council Presidency with Significant Achievements
Cyprus' six-month presidency of the Council of the European Union has been deemed a success, marking a significant accomplishment for the small member state. Throughout its tenure, Cyprus actively engaged in 70 negotiations and trilogues involving the Council, Commission, and Parliament, managed 32 legislative issues, and concluded 27 of them, achieving an 85% completion rate. The presidency also presided over 1,600 meetings and hosted over 25,000 participants, asserting Cyprus’ role on the European stage.
Key to this success was Cyprus’ ability to contribute substantively without focusing solely on national issues, maintaining a balanced and credible presence in EU affairs including geopolitics amid ongoing conflicts and security challenges. The coordination led by Deputy Minister Marilena Raouna and Foreign Ministry efforts under Konstantinos Komnos were particularly praised for their professionalism and effective management.
While the presidency did not resolve Cyprus' long-standing national issues, it enhanced the country's credibility within the EU framework, creating political capital that could be leveraged in future negotiations. This period reflects Cyprus’ growth as a reliable and serious EU member state, moving beyond past practices and gaining influence in European decision-making processes.
