🔥 EU allocates €9.21 million to Cyprus for wildfire recovery efforts
The European Parliament has approved the allocation of over €9 million from the European Union solidarity fund to assist Cyprus in rebuilding infrastructure damaged by last year's deadly wildfire in the Limassol district. The measure received strong support with 642 MEPs voting in favor, including all six Cypriot representatives. Cyprus had previously received an advance payment of €2.3 million to aid initial recovery efforts.
The funds will be used to finance emergency response measures including the restoration of essential infrastructure and public services, cleanup of affected areas, and provision of temporary accommodations and rescue services. The wildfire displaced thousands and destroyed more than 900 private properties, severely impacting education and healthcare services.
In addition to Cyprus, the European Parliament approved €120.55 million in funding for Spain to address multiple major wildfires, and €14.34 million for Romania following severe flooding last year. Spain also received an advance payment of €30 million.
