Greek MEP Eleonora Meleti of the EPP group will hold a press conference in Strasbourg following a European Parliament vote on a resolution addressing the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus. The resolution calls for accountability for perpetrators and support for survivors, particularly highlighting the systematic sexual violence committed against Greek Cypriot women during the conflict.

The resolution condemns the ongoing Turkish occupation, describing the sexual violence as a grave breach of the Geneva Conventions and urging recognition, accountability, and comprehensive support for survivors. It also emphasizes the importance of full and meaningful participation of Cypriot women in peace processes and supports initiatives such as a monument in Nicosia to honor victims.

The resolution follows earlier findings by the European Commission of Human Rights and rulings from the European Court of Human Rights holding Turkey responsible for various human rights violations in Cyprus. Eleonora Meleti stated the resolution recognizes the suffering and resilience of Cypriot women and underlines the importance of international law and European values in addressing the Cyprus issue.
