🌍 Cyprus maintains communication with NATO summit participants to safeguard national interests
Cyprus is actively engaging with participants of the ongoing NATO summit in Ankara to stay informed and ensure its national interests are represented, despite not being a member of the alliance, Foreign Minister Konstantinos Kompos stated. He emphasized that while Cyprus cannot intervene directly in NATO discussions, contacts with European officials and other attendees allow the country to convey its key positions and monitor developments.
Minister Kompos updated the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign and European Affairs on the Republic of Cyprus' foreign policy and the outcomes of its EU Council Presidency. Discussions covered a range of issues including the country's strategic expansion of diplomatic presence, progress on Schengen integration, and ongoing efforts regarding the US visa waiver and arms embargo.
The committee exchanged views on regional geopolitical shifts, Cyprus's role in EU initiatives, and cooperation with international organizations. Kompos highlighted the importance of Cyprus maintaining an active and outward-looking foreign policy amid a complex geopolitical environment, aiming to protect the Republic’s interests and enhance its strategic partnerships in the Eastern Mediterranean.
