💊 Businesses and healthcare urged to intensify Legionella precautions amid summer heat

The Labour Inspection Department has called on businesses, hotels, and healthcare facilities in Cyprus to enhance precautions against Legionella bacteria this summer. Elevated temperatures combined with increased use of cooling systems create ideal conditions for Legionella growth in water systems if maintenance is insufficient. The bacteria thrive in stagnant water within artificial systems such as cooling towers, spas, and large water storage tanks.

Legionella spreads through inhaling contaminated water droplets and poses a serious health risk, particularly in hospitals, elderly care homes, and rehabilitation centers. To mitigate risks, facilities must appoint responsible persons, conduct regular risk assessments, and maintain water temperatures above 50°C for hot water and below 25°C for cold water. Infrequently used taps and showers should be flushed regularly, and all water-related equipment cleaned and disinfected frequently.

The department emphasized that preventing Legionella is a legal health and safety requirement for employers. Regular monitoring, testing, and proper water system management are crucial to protect vulnerable populations, especially patients and the elderly, from severe illness caused by the bacteria.
