👮 Ecologists oppose stray dog culling in Paphos forest, urge humane solutions
The Movement of Ecologists – Citizens’ Cooperation has strongly opposed proposals to cull stray dogs in the Paphos state forest, following concerns about attacks on the protected Cyprus mouflon and other wildlife. The group urges the government to reject culling as a solution and instead focus on humane and science-based methods.
The Forest Department had convened a meeting to address issues with stray dogs endangering wildlife and visitors. While acknowledging the importance of protecting the Cyprus mouflon, the movement emphasized that killing stray dogs punishes animals abandoned due to human negligence and ineffective state policies.
The Ecologists advocate for alternatives such as sterilization, microchipping, responsible ownership programs, and the transfer of animals to shelters. They called on civil society and authorities to adopt comprehensive management plans that balance wildlife protection with animal welfare rather than resorting to extermination.
