🌍 Cyprus Agriculture Department Urges Travellers to Avoid Bringing Plants and Seeds to Protect Local Environment
The Cyprus agriculture department has issued a strong warning to travellers against bringing plants, seeds, and plant products into the country due to the risk of introducing harmful pests and diseases. Even small items like a single plant or packet of seeds can carry insects, fungi, or bacteria not present in Cyprus, potentially threatening local crops, wildlife, and the economy.
This advisory coincides with Cyprus’s involvement in the final year of the European PlantHealth4Life campaign, which promotes plant health awareness across 33 European countries. Officials highlighted pests such as the red palm weevil, which has already caused extensive damage to palm trees, and stressed the threat posed to olive trees, vineyards, and citrus crops by imported pathogens.
The agriculture department urges travellers to seek guidance before transporting plant products, avoid uncertified items, inspect plants for signs of disease, and report any suspicious findings. Protecting Cyprus’s unique and sensitive flora requires collective action to safeguard the island’s environment and agricultural economy.
