🌦️ Cyprus urged to plan energy transition carefully to protect environment and ecosystems
The federation of environmental organisations (Opok) has called for Cyprus to properly plan its energy transition to align with EU environmental guidelines and protect ecosystems. While renewable energy remains a top priority for achieving climate goals, Opok expressed concern over the government's approval of large-scale projects like those in Lythrodontas-Mathiatis and Alambra-Ayia Varvara without a clear framework.
Opok criticized the current energy planning as sloppy, highlighting the uncontrolled expansion of photovoltaic parks into forest and agricultural land. This development threatens local biodiversity, contributes to soil erosion, and imposes serious aesthetic and ecological burdens. The federation stressed that setting up high-power photovoltaic parks near communities requires particular care, with thorough environmental impact assessments to ensure protection of valuable ecosystems during the green transition.
