🏆 United Nations awards medals to 107 peacekeepers serving in Cyprus mission
The United Nations awarded medals to 107 peacekeepers on Monday in recognition of their service with the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (Unficyp). The honored personnel hail from countries including Argentina, Austria, Bangladesh, Ghana, India, Pakistan, Slovakia, and the United Kingdom.
Established in 1964 following intercommunal violence between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, Unficyp is one of the UN’s longest-running peacekeeping missions. The force has been patrolling the Green Line buffer zone since 1974 to maintain peace and stability on the island.
As of April, Unficyp comprised 924 deployed peacekeeping personnel, mainly from Argentina, the UK, and Slovakia, with contributions from over a dozen other countries. The mission’s mandate was most recently renewed by the UN Security Council in January, underscoring ongoing international support for its efforts in Cyprus.
