👮 Lawyer criticizes handling of Mafia State investigation report, calls for institutional change
Lito Kariolou, lawyer for Mafial State author Makarios Drousiotis, condemned the transfer of the investigation report, witness testimonies, and evidence to the cabinet and police, calling it an "institutional collapse." She expressed concern that sensitive testimony, given under confidentiality assurances, was at risk as the Legal Council handed all investigation materials to both the police and Council of Ministers.
Kariolou criticized President Nikos Christodoulides’s involvement, noting a conflict of interest due to his prior government role and testimony in the case. She questioned why he did not recuse himself, unlike the attorney-general and deputy attorney-general, and warned that the sharing of documents exposed witnesses to potential dangers.
Proposing a solution, Kariolou supported a suggestion for the Transparency Commissioner, currently leading the investigation, to be empowered to appoint criminal investigators, although this would require legal amendments. The anti-corruption authority previously found former President Nicos Anastasiades and others potentially criminally liable in connection to Drousiotis’s allegations.
