👮 Cyprus to Pilot AI-Powered Cameras Targeting Mobile Phone Use While Driving in Nicosia

The Cyprus Traffic Police are set to install the country’s first two AI-powered fixed cameras on Griva Digeni Avenue in Nicosia, replacing older out-of-service units. These advanced cameras, positioned in the Engomi area, will specifically detect drivers using mobile phones, a leading cause of road fatalities in Cyprus.

Using artificial intelligence, the system will analyze footage to identify mobile phone use while driving, with officers reviewing violations before issuing fines. This pilot initiative aims to curb distracted driving and could be expanded to other urban locations depending on its success.

In addition to the new camera deployment, efforts are underway to focus mobile speed cameras more within cities rather than motorways, to address the higher incidence of fatal collisions in urban areas. Authorities are also tackling the challenge of over 360,000 outstanding fines, introducing measures such as notifications by SMS or email and issuing fines at checkpoints to improve enforcement.
